I have no logo for Urgell y Gomà S.L. or for their Pony motorcycle brand and so I have used the official flag of Catalonia, known as the Senyera
Urgell y Gomà S.L. was a small Catalan manufacturer of lightweight motorcycles (the Pony) and motocarros (the Pato) from its premises in Barcelona. The company were only active from 1952 to 1955, but they sold off their designs and tooling, and these were developed under new ownership Rekord (motorcycles) and Cremsa (Pato motocarros).
The Pony motorcycle was presented at the Fira de Barcelona in 1954. It was fitted with a Gnome et Rhône** R3C, 125cc, 2‑stroke engine and a 3‑speed gearbox. The frame was a tubular steel, double cradle with a leading link telescopic front fork and a rigid rear end. Production numbers are estimated at 30 units.
** Gnome et Rhone engines were built under licence in Barcelona by Altosen S.A. at Santa Coloma, 6
Between 1952 and 1953, Urgell y Gomà embarked on a Scooter project – the Condal – but it never made it into full production. The chassis and its mechanical configuration went on to form the basis of what became the Pato delivery tricycle in 1954. Typically fitted with Hispano‑Villiers 125cc engines, they were sold primarily to local small businesses for urban delivery work.
Urgell y Gomà sold their motorcycle tooling and design rights to Manuel Peix, a rider for the brand and a mechanic. Peix had his own workshop at, Carrer Sant Antoni Mª Claret 79, Barcelona and, with some modifications, he went on to launch the Rekord brand using the Pony as an initial platform.
Footnote:
The final, unsold, Pony motorcycle units were later marketed under the Alpha (Barcelona) brand after the company ceased motorcycle production.
